2021-22 Marvin and Kathleen Stone Research Fellows
Gregorio Barahona Ocampo
Gregorio Barahona Ocampo is an undergraduate student at UT Dallas, majoring in philosophy. His academic interests include philosophy of science, language and society, political economy and democracy, and phenomenology. Outside school, Gregorio spends his time on music, horror media and poetry, language learning, and cooking. He is also loves wildlife and the outdoors. Gregorio’s project this year will center around contemporary industrialized agriculture, its political and environmental repercussions, and some possibilities for its transformation. His work will focus on Latin America.
Arlin Khan
Arlin Khan, a premed undergraduate student at UT Dallas, double-majors in neuroscience and history. She is an advocate for medical equity and cultural competency in healthcare. In her studies, she focuses on the history and evolution of healthcare systems across ages and cultures. Specifically, Arlin looks at how cultural beliefs and traditions, during events such as wars and epidemics, impact how people dealt with illnesses. In her project, Arlin will investigate how the religion of Islam influenced the plague response in the Middle East during the Black Death. In her free time, Arlin enjoys tutoring; she is also on the UT Dallas Speech Team and participates in numerious speech tournaments.
Current Graduate Students
Thomas Rocha
Thomas Rocha is an MA student in the History of Ideas at The University of Texas at Dallas. His areas of interest are many, but include the History and Philosophy of Science, Philosophy of Art, epistemology, writing as a pursuit, and the intersections of philosophy and literature. He has been an enthusiastic member of the CVMST lab since he was first invited in the Fall of 2018. Thomas is currently working on various essays that attempt to combine the rigor of philosophy with the artistry of creative nonfiction. He and his wife have two children, two dogs, two guinea pigs, nine chickens, and six fish. He is the first in his family to go to college, and his parents are very proud.
